This is a fantastic opportunity for community members to exchange puzzles they’ve already conquered for fresh challenges.     Join us at Batesville Library on August 16 at 11:00am for a Kids Storytime during the Ripley County Reads Author Fair. Author Gena Stonefield, Children's Book Author, will read her NEW book: Charlie's Service Dog Tail "Charlie's Service Dog Tail shares the heartwarming story of Charlie, a puppy training to become a service dog for his owner, Brooke. This touching tale highlights their unique bond and service dogs' important role in everyday life." ABOUT GENA: Gena has been associated with Circle Tail, Inc. since 2019 and Pet Partners of Greater Cincinnati since 2022.  Alongside her loyal companion, Wenli, they represent Circle Tail, Inc. as an Ambassador Team and Pet Partners of Greater Cincinnati as a Therapy Team.  With a lifelong passion for animals, Gena is dedicated to educating both children and adults about the vital roles and functions of service and therapy dogs ABOUT WENLI: Wenli is a 5-year-old Labrador Retriever who spent two years in Circle Tail, Inc.’s service dog training program. While she showed strong potential, her love of people and socialization led to a career change. Gena adopted her and she works as a therapy dog, a role that suits her sweet and friendly nature and allows her to connect with others meaningfully.

  • Ripley County Reads Author Fair

    The Ripley County Reads Author Fair is an opportunity for the public to meet with 25+ regional authors, ask questions about their books and the writing process, and purchase their books. This year's author is Kenneth Woods, AKA “KennyFresh,” a spoken word artist, writer, poet, and published author. He has performed in the Midwest as well as in various states throughout the U.S. His well traveled experience as a child, Hawaii born with naval parents, influenced his ability to adapt, refocus, and reconnect. Meet and Greet with the regional authors at the library from 10:30 - 12:30pm. STORYTIME with Gena Stonefield and her DOG Wenli at 11:00am. Following the fair at 1:15pm we will host a FREE Writer's Critique Workshop.  What is a Writer's Critique Workshop? In a writer's critique group, members typically gather to share their works-in-progress with peers for constructive feedback. Each writer takes turns presenting their piece, while others listen, noting strengths and areas for improvement. Discussions focus on elements like plot, character development, writing style, and overall impact. The atmosphere is collaborative and supportive, helping writers refine their craft through constructive criticism. The first 50 people to arrive will receive a Swag Bag. View the day EVENTS here.     Want to help us decorate for Summer Reading?  Sign up below to paint the outside of our library windows!  This year’s theme is Color Our World. The possibilities are endless. We will supply the paint and brushes. YOU MUST STOP BY THE LIBRARY FOR A PLANNING SHEET PRIOR TO THE PROGRAM DATE – OR – you can sketch out your idea on white computer paper. You must have something drawn to show us for approval before you begin painting. We will have a 3ft x 3 ft square outlined with painters tape. That will be your work area! You only have 1 hour for your allotted time slot so PLEASE really think about what it is you would like to paint. We will be here to help as well. Your work will be displayed all summer!  This program is for children in 3rd to 12th grade and registration is required.  PLEASE CHOOSE WHICH TIME SLOT YOU WOULD LIKE AND COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION FORM BELOW.

  • Encaustic Collage – Adult Craft

    Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is an ancient art technique that involves applying a heated wax medium mixed with pigments to a surface. This class will use these classical techniques along with embedding techniques of collage enabling each participant to create a one of a kind piece.  REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. This class will be led by professional artist Thom Maltbie. There is no cost to the program, but donations are welcomed. Sign up below for this program.

  • One State One Story: Book Discussion at Batesville Library

    A Novel Idea is BMPL's book club. Join us each month to explore and discuss the month's book. A Novel Idea Book Club meets in the library on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. In September, we will read along with Ripley County Reads in the One State/ One Story program from the Indiana Humanities. All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles is the winner of the 2021 National Book Award in nonfiction. The book tells the story of Ashley’s sack, which Ashley’s great-great-great-great-granddaughter, Miles, found in her parents’ attic. The sack is made of flour and sugar sacks and holds scraps of fabric, buttons, beads, and other items that Ashley probably carried with her as a slave. Nancy Durham will lead the discussion. There will be programs throughout Ripley County that coordinate with this book. This year author Shannon Anderson will be doing a kids (suggested ages 3-6 year olds) Storytime (no registration) at 10:15AM and an Author Talk during the fair at 11AM.  Following the fair at 1:30PM Shannon will present a Writer's Critique Workshop.  What is a Writer's Critique Workshop? Are you an aspiring author who wants to improve your writing? Are you a published author struggling with a section of your current project? Come learn what makes a successful critique group from award-winning author Shannon Anderson. This session aims to provide the structure of an effective critique group.
