    The talk will discuss photography of common but beautiful sights around us, literally in our backyards. We'll discuss approaches to composing photos, including varying perspectives and imaginative use of natural lighting. We'll discuss tips to improve the overall quality of your photos. The talk will be geared toward owners of any camera, but a portion will be directed toward those with interchangeable lenses. It will use photo examples to demonstrate the ideas discussed.   • POETRY and Open Mic Night

    Join Indiana poet Skye Nicholson for an evening of poetry! Skye will lead off the night by performing pieces from her newly released second book, The Other Side of the Stars. Following a brief Q&A, audience members can share their poetry (or read a favorite poem) in an "Open Mic" style setting. Skye will have copies of her three books available for purchase. This is a NO cost program and open to the community. NO REGISTRATION. Open Mic Guidelines: Stick around after Skye's reading to enjoy original poetry and readings from local artists, or present your own writing in a relaxed and nonjudgmental space. Signups for the Open Mic portion will begin at 5:30PM. Space is limited and will be granted on a first come first serve basis. FOR THOSE READING: Please limit your reading to approximately 3 minutes. Feel free to read an original poem or one from your favorite poet. This event is held in a public setting, so please keep language to a PG-13 level. Discriminatory language (based on race, religion, sexual identity, origin, age, disability, or genetic information) will not be tolerated. FOR THOSE LISTENING: Due to the open format, this event may involve topics or language that may upset some listeners.  Recommended age 14+

  • WonderLab – Hair Raising Science Program

    Join us on Thursday, March 21 at 4:00pm for some Hair Raising Science presented by WonderLab (The Museum of Science, Health and Technology) from Bloomington, IN. Our focus age group for this program are 1st - 6th graders, however families may sign up if majority of your kiddos fall with-in this age range. This program will hold 50 people. Please REGISTER with your FIRST & LAST NAME with NUMBER OF PEOPLE ATTENDING. What does lightning have to do with your socks? Static electricity!  Learn how electricity is generated and how it impacts our lives from making your sock stick to your sweater to creating a bolt of lightning. Together we’ll perform electrifying experiments with our Van de Graaff generator.  Demonstrations include mini bolts of lightning, floating packing peanuts, and will even give someone’s hair an “Extreme Van de Graaff Makeover”!  This demo is sure to spark interest in science! The WonderLab Museum of Science, Health & Technology is a science museum located in the city of Bloomington, Indiana.     This is a fun interactive talk focusing on the upcoming Solar Eclipse in April. Do your kiddos have questions?? Mark will be here to hopefully provide some answers! NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. WE SUGGEST CHILDREN IN GRADES 1ST - 8TH FOR THIS TALK.  FREE ECLIPSE GLASSES FOR ATTENDEES. Mark Littman teaches science writing at the University of Tennessee, holding three distinguished professorships. Mark received a B.S. in chemistry and literature at MIT, an M.A. in creative writing at Hollins College, and a Ph.D. in English at Northwestern University. Mark's books about solar eclipses, giant meteor storms, Halley's Comet, and the discovery of the outer planets have won four national awards. Mark's plays include Halley and Newton, how Edmond Halley made Isaac Newton famous, and Little Lessons for Lina, about Caroline Herschel, the first woman professional astronomer. Before coming to the University of Tennessee in 1991, Mark taught astronomy at Loyola College in Maryland and the University of Utah. He directed the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City from 1965 to 1983. He wrote and produced 35 planetarium programs, some still performed worldwide. The International Astronomical Union honored Mark by naming Asteroid 303265 after him.

    BMPL's Solar Eclipse Series A solar eclipse is an awe inspiring event that throughout history has caused dread, foretold the fall of kingdoms, and stopped armies in their tracks. In a clockwork heaven it is something both predictable, yet rare, natural, yet utterly foreign to our everyday experiences. From eclipses of sun and moon we have measured the size of the moon, shape of the Earth, and mapped out the world. Today, they are no longer omens of doom, but tourist attractions that thrill millions where they occur in an event both interplanetary, yet deeply personal.     BMPL's Solar Eclipse Series Dr. Kate Russo is an author, psychologist, and eclipse chaser; and Founder of Being in the Shadow. Kate has now seen 13 total solar eclipses from 11 countries in her 24 years of chasing, and will be an eclipse chaser for life. She has published three books on the experience of totality, leads niche eclipse tours, and is in demand in the media and as a speaker due to her passionate sharing of the awe and wonder of totality. She also plays a leadership role in helping communities prepare for totality. In her presentation, Kate will share her insights and advice on preparing for your first-time total eclipse experience.
