DESCRIPTION:Join retired English Professor Ron Nicholas as he shares background\, tells some amusing stories\, and does some dramatic readings of some beloved Christmas poems\, “A Visit from Saint Nick”\, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”\, and “I Heard the Bells” and dig into their backstories and little-known secrets. For example\, I will look at the raging debate over who really wrote the quintessential Christmas poem attributed to Clement Moore. And did you know the inspiration for the Grinch was the author himself during a period of depression? I will look at the symbolism in “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and “The Holly and the Ivy” and the backstories to some of the most beloved Christmas poems. Also\, I will feature classic poems that became popular Christmas songs\, such as “Good King Wenceslas”\, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”\, and “Come\, All Ye Faithful”. I will mix in a few other wonderful but lesser-known poems such as hilarious “December 26” and “Minstrels” by Wordsworth and\, of course\, unpack “Old Lang Syne” by Robert Burns.  \nHot chocolate and Holiday cookies will be available for added enjoyment. \nNO Registration.

It helps participants see the world with an artist’s eye. It teaches hand-eye coordination\, hones observational skills\, and does wonders for relaxation through releasing attachment to perfection and finding a new connection within our brain. \nDuring a life drawing session\, a clothed model is surrounded by participants and the instructor. The model poses for different durations. Some popular mediums used during life drawings are charcoal\, graphite\, pen\, ink and/or pastels. We will start with the basics and work our way through a variety of mediums. \nThe great thing about Life Drawing is that in just one class\, you can see a marked change – if not in your drawings\, in your perspective. In five classes\, improvements will be very obvious. To highlight this progress and to treat the participants as real artists\, the final class will be a gallery-style show. Families and community members will be invited to see the work displayed. The work will also be on public display for a few weeks after the gallery’s opening night.  \n  \nYou do not have to be able to “draw” to sign up. You only have to have an interest in drawing. This class is for beginners up to advanced ability.  If you are thinking\, “I can’t draw anything” this is the PERFECT class for you. If you are already skilled in drawing\, come and refine your skills with assistance from a professional artist. \nThe artist: Rebecca Davies is an accomplished artist and teacher. BFA in Art Education from the University of Cincinnati. She continued with graduate studies in Fine Arts at IU\, UC\, VCU. She was a beloved art teacher at area schools (East Central\, Batesville Intermediate) to grades 3-12 for 25 years. Even when teaching\, she always maintained an active studio life. For a while\, she saw herself as a painter who teaches\, and then she fell in love with teaching\, and everything was Art. Now she’s back full-time in the studio.  \nDrawing and painting with a live model is one of her favorite things\, and she has much to share about the process! \n \nThis activity is made possible in part by the Indiana Arts Commission\, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administrations Division of Aging.

DESCRIPTION:At 4:30 pm on March 4th Mark Littman will be doing a KIDS TOTALITY TALK!  This is a fun interactive talk focusing on the upcoming Solar Eclipse in April. Do your kiddos have questions?? Mark will be here to hopefully provide some answers! \nThen he will talk to the Adult community at 6:30pm on March 4th. \nNO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.  OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY.  ADULT TALK.  FREE ECLIPSE GLASSES TO ATTENDEES. \nThis talk is based on Mark Littman’s comprehensive book about eclipses of the same name. You will learn about solar eclipses\, especially total eclipses\, featuring the upcoming eclipse. The talk includes not only the science of eclipses (in terms everyone can understand) but also the mythology and folklore of eclipses\, how humans have reacted to them in the past\, what we have learned from eclipses\, and how to observe a solar eclipse safely and most enjoyably. \nMark Littmann teaches science writing at the University of Tennessee\, holding three distinguished professorships. Mark received a B.S. in chemistry and literature at MIT\, an M.A. in creative writing at Hollins College\, and a Ph.D. in English at Northwestern University. Mark’s books about solar eclipses\, giant meteor storms\, Halley’s Comet\, and the discovery of the outer planets have won four national awards. Mark’s plays include Halley and Newton\, how Edmond Halley made Isaac Newton famous\, and Little Lessons for Lina\, about Caroline Herschel\, the first woman professional astronomer. Before coming to the University of Tennessee in 1991\, Mark taught astronomy at Loyola College in Maryland and the University of Utah. He directed the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City from 1965 to 1983. He wrote and produced 35 planetarium programs\, some still performed worldwide. The International Astronomical Union honored Mark by naming Asteroid 303265 after him.
