SUMMARY:Special Problems in Time and Risk: Economics Plain and Simple
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps the most important thing about risk is its inescapability. Particular individuals\, groups\, or institutions may be sheltered from risk—but only at the cost of having someone else bear that risk. There is no “someone” else for society as a whole. Obvious as this may seem\, it is easy to forget\, especially by those who are sheltered from risk\, as many are\, to varying degrees. \nLearning economics need not be so confusing as many of the concepts are fairly straightforward. These talks aim to explain key economic principles in plain English\, rather than economic jargon\, and without all of the charts\, graphs\, and equations that make economics so complicated. These talks will use real-life examples to which many\, if not all of us\, can relate. \nInstructor Marc Cerniglia has over 30 years of business experience working in industry\, financial markets\, consulting\, and has owned his own consulting business for the past 24 years. He has taught economics to high school seniors and is a former U.S. Army officer. Mr. Cerniglia holds a B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia. \nThese talks are open the to the community and registration is requested. They will be speaking about Eclipses\, Tides\, & Our Moon during the presentation to coincide with the solar eclipse happening on April 8th. \nThe Explorer Dome provides the perfect atmosphere for teaching and lively discussions that support learning in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. You bring the thirst for knowledge and we’ll give you outstanding instruction and a valuable experience. \nWe recommend grades 1st through Adult with the presentation that will be provided. \nBrought to you by: The Joan and John W. Mark will be here to hopefully provide some answers! \nThen he will talk to the Adult community at 6:30pm on March 4th. \nNO REGISTRATION REQUIRED.  OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY.  ADULT TALK.  FREE ECLIPSE GLASSES TO ATTENDEES. \nThis talk is based on Mark Littman’s comprehensive book about eclipses of the same name. You will learn about solar eclipses\, especially total eclipses\, featuring the upcoming eclipse. The talk includes not only the science of eclipses (in terms everyone can understand) but also the mythology and folklore of eclipses\, how humans have reacted to them in the past\, what we have learned from eclipses\, and how to observe a solar eclipse safely and most enjoyably. \nMark Littmann teaches science writing at the University of Tennessee\, holding three distinguished professorships. Mark received a B.S. in chemistry and literature at MIT\, an M.A. in creative writing at Hollins College\, and a Ph.D. in English at Northwestern University. Mark’s books about solar eclipses\, giant meteor storms\, Halley’s Comet\, and the discovery of the outer planets have won four national awards. Mark’s plays include Halley and Newton\, how Edmond Halley made Isaac Newton famous\, and Little Lessons for Lina\, about Caroline Herschel\, the first woman professional astronomer. Before coming to the University of Tennessee in 1991\, Mark taught astronomy at Loyola College in Maryland and the University of Utah. He directed the Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City from 1965 to 1983. He wrote and produced 35 planetarium programs\, some still performed worldwide. The International Astronomical Union honored Mark by naming Asteroid 303265 after him.
